Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has been charged with possession of a controlled substance _ codeine syrup _ after being arrested at his home in Alabama on Monday, authorities said.
The 24-year-old former LSU star and the No. 1 draft choice in 2007 was arrested as part of an undercover narcotics investigation, said Mobile County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lori Myles. She would not say what led to his arrest. She said he did not have a prescription for the codeine.
Russell, who graduated from high school in Mobile, was booked into the city jail and released soon afterward on $2,500 bond, online records show.
The Raiders released Russell, considered one of the NFL’s biggest draft busts, in May after he won only seven of his 25 starts and was benched. He completed just 52.1 percent of his passes in his career with 18 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 15 lost fumbles and a passer rating of 65.2.

Oakland paid Russell about $36.4 million through the 2009 season. Since the start of the common draft in 1967, only one other No. 1 pick was released this quickly in his NFL career. Indianapolis cut 1992 top pick Steve Emtman after three seasons, but that was more because of injuries than production.
Russell and his agent did not immediately return calls for comment.

Wether he is bad news off the field or not I don’t really care. I just know that he is the single biggest bust in the history of football. I think this is reason enough for him to go to prison for life! If I worked for Mobile I would lock him up on a ficticious charge too just for embarassing my city. I wonder how long it’s gona take for him to go through all his money. I’d say not long if he lives with in a mile of a pharmacy and a whataburger.

I feel Russell’s first mistake was not playing the 1st season after he was drafted.instead he held out for more money. Money is important but the love of the game and desire to play should be primary. Once Russell decided he got enough money and decided to play he did nothing but disappoint. He stood on the sideline sporting a big old diamond in his ear thinking how lucky the raiders were to have him. His ego was so big I am surprised his head fit in the helmet. Russell was living like a rock star. But to be a Rock star you gotta have a hit record. I am glad I didn’t buy a Russell T-shirt.
I do hope Russell cleans up his act and is humbled by what has happened to him.
Maybe he has been crucified because he deserves it! Collecting 10s of millions of dollars to represent a team and a city….and then being too fat and lazy to work out (uh…that is what ATHLETES are supposed to do) will tend to irritate a few people. On top of that the cough syrup shows just plain stupidity.
Dear Mobilian,even if the “local police have it out for him”; no one forced him to have coduine in his possession illegally. It is just this type of attitude that has enabled him to make far more than he is worth, to be lazy, and to underperform. The guy showed up every year out of shape, with no knowledge of the offense. Jamarcus Russell is a joke. He is also a thief for basically stealing from the Tadiers. I am not a Raider fan, but find how he has conducted himself over his whole career very telling about his lack of character.
Then he gets busted for drugs (suprise), and people like you want to claim he is being made an example of, or cry out poor Jamarcus…next thing you know, you will pull out the race card and say its discrimination?
What it really is, is that he is a self important entittled, spoiled young man who needs to remove his head from his you know what, and get his lazy butt to work.
